Galaxy Note 8 vs Galaxy S8

Here's How They're Different And Is It Worth It...

By Brandon Lee Westraat on 7th September 2017

There is some tough competition out there for the Galaxy Note 8. We are spoiled for choice with devices like the LG G6 And the V30, Then we have the iPhone and OnePlus5 just to mention a few. BUT…. if you are like me, I’m sort of scratching my head asking why they released the Note 8 so soon after the amazing S8 and S8+.It’s kind of like they fighting themselves.

NOW… after Last year’s debacle of the Note 7 trying to kill us in our sleep or in most cases burn our legs off while flying out to see the family, But You can Breathe easy because the new Note 8 has an 8-point battery safety check procedure. Now that we know its safe do you think it’s different enough to stand out from the devices Samsung has released this past year?

The Note 8 sitting side by side to the S8+ is very similar. From the form factor to porting the same curved infinity display that goes from near edge to edge, as well as a pressure-sensitive home button and the much dreaded back-mounted fingerprint reader. Come on Samsung you make enough hardware for apple, can’t they give you the home button with the fingerprint sensor! Enough about my frustrations, let’s see the differences because that’s what we are here for...

Galaxy Note 8 vs S8 Specs

Screen

The 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch Super AMOLED display on the Galaxy S8 and S8+ are truly stunning. But if you want an even bigger canvas, the Note 8 has you covered. The Note 8's 6.3-inch screen is the biggest in Samsung's current line-up, making it ideal for getting lost binge watching Netflix shows on the go or getting serious work done with the included S Pen.

Camera

The Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus top my list for the Best Camera Phones because they offer the best image quality versus the competition. However, they may soon be outdone by the Note 8, Because Samsung has finally stepped up, demolishing the trend and given us duel cameras with a kick.

The Note 8's dual 12-megapixel cameras boast a 2x optical zoom, which matches the iPhone 7 Plus, as well as a 10x digital zoom. Both of the Note 8's cameras sport optical image stabilization and are capable of the same background-blurring "bokeh" effect that the 7 Plus offers for portraits. This is amazing for those Instagram addicts (myself included) that want the perfect selfie or good looking insta-story.

Special Features

Perhaps the easiest way to determine whether the Note 8 or S8 is right for you is to ask yourself whether you want to use a stylus. The S Pen is back for the Note 8, allowing you to take notes with ease — even when the screen is off. The Note 8 improves on the Screen off Memo feature that debuted on the Note 7, this time letting you jot down up to 100 pages of notes without even unlocking your phone. Other notable S Pen features include Live Messages, which let you sketch your own GIFs, as well as improved translation capabilities. Like the Galaxy S8, the Note 8 can access Bixby, Samsung's Siri-like virtual assistant that still needs some improvement, but ask Bixby to beatbox (I dare you).

Specs

The Galaxy Note 8 sports the same Snapdragon 835 processor as the Galaxy S8 and S8+, but benefits from a beefier 6GB of RAM compared to the S8's 4GB. That could lead to a slight performance bump for folks who plan on using Samsung's phablet for multitasking between apps and jotting down lots of notes.

Like the Galaxy S8, the Note 8 comes with 64GB of internal storage that you can expand to up to 256GB using a microSD card.

Price

The Galaxy Note 8 will staggeringly cost between R18 499 (depending on your network provider) when it launches on the 22nd of September, retaining the Note line's reputation as the most expensive of the Samsung's mobile device line-up.

By comparison, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ released at prices of R15 499 and R17 499 but have since dropped considerably. So let’s pray that the same happens to the Note 8 because It doesn’t feel right to me buying a phone that cost more than my first car did.
