Nutricia Baby Formula Pulled from Clicks and Dis-Chem Over Toxin Fears
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has urged parents and caregivers to check their baby formula following an urgent recall of nearly 3,000 units of infant nutrition products manufactured by Nutricia Southern Africa.
Specific batches of Nutricia Aptamil Nutribiotik 2 (800g) and Nutricia Aptajunior Nutribiotik 3 (800g) have been pulled from shelves at major retailers, including Clicks and Dis-Chem, due to possible toxin contamination.
The Health Risk
According to Nutricia Southern Africa, a raw material used in the production of the affected batches may contain traces of cereulide. Exposure to this toxin can lead to foodborne illness, presenting with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and severe abdominal cramps.
This incident follows a similar scare earlier this year. In January 2026, Nestlé was forced to recall batches of its Special Pro HA Infant Formula after identifying the potential presence of the same cereulide toxin.
Distribution and Affected Batches
The recalled products, totaling 2,989 units, have been distributed nationally across South Africa by United Pharmaceutical since August 2025. The manufacturer confirmed that the affected stock was also exported to neighboring countries, including Botswana and Namibia.
Parents are urged to immediately stop using the formula and check the bottom of their tins for the following batch numbers:
-
Aptamil Nutribiotik 2 (800g) – Batch Number: 20260911 (Expiry Date: 11 September 2026)
-
Aptamil Nutribiotik 2 (800g) – Batch Number: 20261209 (Expiry Date: 9 December 2026)
-
Aptajunior Nutribiotik 3 (800g) – Batch Number: 20261209 (Expiry Date: 9 December 2026)
What Consumers Should Do
The NCC has stated it is monitoring the recall closely to safeguard consumer rights and ensure full compliance with the Consumer Protection Act.
If you have purchased any of the products listed above, do not consume them. Consumers are encouraged to return the affected items to their point of purchase for a full refund.
