Beware of this scam: Takealot is not selling appliances for R60

South African e-commerce company Takealot has issued a warning to its customers about a fake retailer using its branding to sell cheap appliances.

This comes after multiple social media users sharing photos of a Smeg kettle and a Samsung QLED Tv going for a low price of R60.

Unfortunately, many Facebook users had already fallen victim to the scams. Many said they provided their banking card details to the site and that amounts were being deducted from their accounts.

“We have been made aware of fraudulent promotions doing the rounds on social media. Please note that these posts are not official Takealot.com communication and are scams,” the online retailer said.

"We strongly recommend that you do not engage with them in any form."

The company also noted the following:
  • It does not have any R60 product promotions including, but not limited to, TVs, mobile phones, hairdryers, kettles.
  • It does not request payment to enter into a competition
  • They will not charge for the delivery of prizes
  • Customers will never have to pay to unlock deals
  • If customers come across any suspicious communication, they should reach out to Takealot to validate its authenticity.
