Pick n Pay launches 100% RPET bag in aid of animal welfare

Pet lovers throughout the country have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of animals in need.

All they need to do is buy Pick n Pay’s latest in a series of new 100% recycled RPET bags designed to help raise funds in aid of the work done by NPO, Project 18, which supports charities caring for lost, abandoned and neglected animals.

The 100% recycled RPET bags feature adorable images of puppies and kittens and are available in select Pick n Pay stores nationwide at a cost of R30 each.

A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of the bags will go towards Project 18, helping them to purchase more than 10,000 kilograms (10 tonnes) of animal food.

Project 18 was founded by 20-year-old Bake Pittaway, a former National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) volunteer from Cape Town. The NPO supports approximately 14 animal shelters and 3,500 animals, providing them with much-needed animal food supplies, pet care products, vaccinations and sterilisations. The organisation also works with the local SPCA providing them with regular food donations.

Pittaway founded Project 18 in celebration of his 18th birthday. “I didn’t want to celebrate the typical way in which people do when stepping into adulthood. So, I decided instead to use the money gifted to me by family and friends to help support local charities.”

Project 18 has since sparked Pittaway’s drive to collect animal food donations for local NGO, Fallen Angels. “We hope to make a difference in the lives of these animals who have been through so much and to bring positive change in communities that need it most.”

Project 18 is expected to go national with its efforts over the course of this year.

“We are extremely proud to have the opportunity to partner on the work that Project 18 is doing in terms of caring for animal welfare, a cause that is close to many people’s hearts and which we can help our customers support,” says Andre Nel, Head Sustainable Development, Pick n Pay.

Aside from the sale of the 100% RPET back, Pick n Pay is encouraging members of the public to get more involved by donating directly to Project 18 by going to www.project18.org.za. Customers are also encouraged to purchase additional bags of pet food for Project 18 or to use the QR code below to donate.

Pick n Pay has launched two other 100% PRPET bags – one in aid of the Save our Beach Huts project, which works to restore the 36 iconic multicolour beach huts in Muizenberg and St James in Cape Town. The other bag supports environmental NGO, Greenpop’s efforts to plant 1000 trees in the Kraaibos Forest, which was devastated during the 2017 forest fires.
