Builders warns customers of fake job and loan scam

Builders South Africa put out a warning in a blog post and on its social media to its customers about a job scam and loan fee scam that has been going around.

The company noticed that fraudsters are going around asking customers for a fee on loan applications.

"We have been informed of a new scam where customers are defrauded of R 500.00 in cash after paying it as an “insurance fee” for personal “Builders” loans of R5000 –R 25000," said the company in a statement.

Builders added that the scammers will send out a fake loan agreement that features its logo plagiarised and placed on the left side (incorrect placement).

Here is the image of the fake loan agreement:

"Builders does not require a fee from customers for any loan products currently offered by the business. We do not process any of our credit products via WhatsApp platform," said the company in a statement.

Builders currently offer only the following Loan products:

Additionally, Builders also warns job hunters about a scam claiming that Builders is recruiting 120 general workers.

The scam involves using images from the inside of a Builders store and of Builders staff members.

Builders encourage people to look out for the following when applying for jobs:

  1. Contact details – Legitimate jobs usually have corporate emails or other ways of contacting the company.
  2. Use of logo / other intellectual property
  3. Payment – If one is asked to pay for a job application, this should be a red flag indicating a scam. All Builders applications are free. For more information on jobs available at Builders visit Careerjunction and the Massmart LinkedIn page.
