ButtaNutt Peanut Butter Recall: Limited Batches Pulled Over Aflatoxin Levels
In a proactive food safety measure, ButtaNutt has issued a voluntary recall for specific batches of its peanut butter. The decision comes after the company's routine internal quality checks revealed trace amounts of aflatoxin that slightly exceed the legally permitted threshold of 10 parts per billion (ppb). Consumers are advised to check their products as the brand works to ensure public safety.
Initial tests on the affected batch showed aflatoxin levels at 46 ppb, which dropped to 28 ppb during a secondary test. Because both results sit above the permitted regulatory limits, ButtaNutt stresses that this voluntary recall is a strictly precautionary measure driven by their commitment to consumer safety and compliance.
Understanding the Health Risks
ButtaNutt has reassured customers that consuming a standard serving from the affected batches is highly unlikely to cause immediate or severe health issues. Health experts note that the primary risks associated with aflatoxins are linked to long-term, chronic exposure.
To put it into perspective: an adult would need to eat more than 2.4kg of highly contaminated peanut butter (at 500 ppb) at least three times a week to experience acute toxic effects. Therefore, a standard serving from these batches is considered a once-off exposure with very low risk.
