Scotch Whisky Laphroaig Select and Laphroaig 10 YO is now available in SA

From a storm-lashed island off the west coast of Scotland to the Southern shores of Africa, comes Laphroaig – pronounced ‘la-froyg’, a Gaelic word meaning ‘beautiful hollow by the broad bay’ – the number one Islay single malt whisky, loved the world over.

Since 1815, when the distillery was officially founded on Islay by farmers Donald and Alexander Johnston, a small team of islanders have combined ancient skills, a dedication to quality and the mystical, peaty water of the Kilbride Stream to create what is considered to be the most distinctive single malt in the world.

Laphroaig was born in a place like no other and forged by people like no other - people of passion, conviction and a vision of nurturing a whisky of immeasurable depth and complexity.

A whisky that takes a little time to know, but is impossible not to love for a lifetime once you do.

Laphroaig is rich, powerful and has an unmistakable, authentic peat smoke flavour, enhanced by the salt and sea air. It’s the signature taste Laphroaig drinkers crave.

For over 190 years, this exceptional whisky has been made the same way – with every step and every time-honoured ingredient added
just the way it was from the beginning.

Laphroaig is made using peat infused water, born from the rains that collect in pools on the moorland, that drain down through the peat and into the Loch Kilbride along with only the finest barley and malting it on a simple stone floor – controlling the germination to peak at 6 days and making them one of only 8 distilleries to still malt their own barley.

The finishing touch is the ageing. Laphroaig whisky rests primarily in first-fill bourbon oak barrels -- some for 10, 18 and even 25 years - all the while breathing in the salt and sea laden air, fresh from the shores of Laphroaig Bay.

The Laphroaig family is the world’s #1 selling family of Islay Single Malt Scotch Whiskies and the current full line includes Laphroaig® 10 Year Old, Laphroaig 10-Year-Old Cask Strength, Laphroaig® Quarter Cask, Laphroaig® 18-Year-Old, Laphroaig® 25-Year-Old, Laphroaig® Select, and Laphroaig® Triple Wood.

Laphroaig 10 Year Old

The 10 Year Old is the original Laphroaig®, distilled the same way today as when Ian Hunter invented it more than 75 years ago. It is the foundation of all other Laphroaig® expressions.

In making Laphroaig, malted barley is dried over a peat fire. The smoke from this peat, found only on Islay,
gives Laphroaig its particularly rich flavour. Those enjoying the 10 Year Old will first notice the bold, smoky taste, followed by a hint of seaweed, a surprising sweetness and a long finish.

Laphroaig Select

The newest member of the Laphroaig Family, Select introduces a unification of some of the favourite Laphroaig expressions.

Master Distiller John Campbell and the entire distilling team at Laphroaig have masterfully created an exciting and unique new expression that stays true to its long and illustrious heritage.

This special Laphroaig is created from five carefully selected casks of each of its key styles, stretching back in time – with one notable addition. The heart of the spirit is drawn from a final maturation in new American Oak casks, rarely used for Scotch whisky maturation – adding a bold flavour.

For the last six months, maturation takes place in the highest, warmest reaches of the Laphroaig warehouses during the Scottish summer. With spirit selected by the master distiller from Quarter Cask, PX Cask and Triple Wood (European Oak casks) and final addition of Laphroaig 10, Laphroaig Select represents a subtle blending of peat, oak and sweetness.

In a 750ml bottle, Laphroaig Select and Laphroaig 10 YO can be found on the shelves of major retailers nationwide such as; Pick n Pay, selected TOPS at Spar, Makro, Ultra Liquors as well as online at Takealot and Wild About Whisky, retailing from R 429.00 to R 699.00 respectively.

Appreciate the craftsmanship of Laphroaig as you sip and enjoy expanding your horizons and becoming a true connoisseur.
