Shoppers stock up on aircons from Massmart over Black Friday weekend

Despite challenging economic conditions, South African shoppers showed up in-store and online to take advantage of Black Friday deals this year.

Massmart reports that aircons sold out in Game, Makro and Builders stores, while other popular items were cellphones, above-ground pools, TVs and generators.

“Our Game and Makro shoppers took advantage of our deals on essentials like soft drinks, toilet paper, pantry items and milk – which, unsurprisingly, were our biggest sellers in terms of units. However, it was interesting to see that our shoppers had, once again, saved up to take advantage of deals on bigger ticket items like TVs, fridges, and air conditioners this year,” explains Katherine Madley, Vice President of Marketing at Massmart. Online best-sellers for Game and Makro also included fridges, soft drinks, rice and TVs.

Cyber Monday also performed well, with online shoppers taking advantage of deals on electronics like laptops, smartphones and speakers.

“Our sales figures show that deep discount days like Black Friday are still relevant and necessary for our customers, who are planning their purchases in advance and prioritising bargain hunting on these,” says Madley.
