Spotify Lite launches in SA

Spotify announced that it has launched a “Lite” version of its music streaming app in South Africa.

The main purpose of any Lite app is to minimise storage space and mobile data usage.

Spotify senior product manager Kalle Persson said in a statement: "Spotify Lite was built from the ground up based on user feedback from around the world, allowing millions more to enjoy the world’s best music experience especially in areas with limited bandwidth and phone storage."

“Lite can be downloaded separately, both for free and premium users, and used either alongside or independently of the main Spotify app on all Android phones running version 4.3 or higher.”

The app only takes up 10MB of storage space once installed, and allows listeners to set a data usage limit and receive a notification once they reach it.

The app will also allow users to clear their cache if they are running low on storage space.

“You’ll still be able to search for and play your favourite songs and artists, save them, share them with others, discover new music and enjoy playlists made just for you, but with a few extra features making it ideal for older devices and operating systems,” said Persson.
